10 most promising neighborhoods for small businesses in 2017

By Max Patel, November 30, 2016.

To honor this year’s Small Business Saturday, we featured a list of America’s Top 25 neighborhoods for small businesses in 2016.

See the full list here.

This list was featured across various news wires and publications leading up to Small Business Saturday.
Our Charlotte franchisee was featured on Television talking about our program and how we help promote local businesses in the community too.

Ranking was determined by surveying active franchisees in the areas where Welcomemat packages are sent out. Franchisees nominated neighborhoods in their community and answered survey questions based on information that included schools, local vibe, family friendliness, walkability, sense of community, etc. Other ranking data points included increase in movement throughout 2016, Welcomemat redemption levels, income levels of redeemers, age of redeemers. Livability scores from areavibes.com were also used in the calculation. These areas were chosen from the over 500 zip codes Welcomemat delivers to. If full data wasn’t available, averages were used in place. Seasonality was also taken into consideration for mover counts. In the case of a tie, lower income levels were given higher priority in the ranks.

As a follow-up, this blog post takes a look at the top 10 markets  for small businesses in 2017.
These markets not only score highly on the key small-business support categories considered in the 2016 rankings but also on factors like economic and population growth.
