Small businesses are the heart of America’s neighborhoods! In honor of Small Business Saturday on November 24, 2018 we’ve pulled the data and determined which 25 local neighborhoods across the country are most likely to support and build flourishing small businesses.
More than 30 million small businesses across the country open their doors every day to serve their local neighborhoods. These local businesses depend on the support of their surrounding community and the local customers that shop at their business.
November 24, 2018 marks Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to supporting and honoring the local business owners that shape local communities. For the third year in a row, Welcomemat Services set out to determine America’s Top 25 Best Neighborhoods for Small Businesses in an effort to honor these local business owners for the whole month of November in what they’re calling Small Business Season. The local advertising company evaluated over 450 neighborhoods across the country on factors such as business density, influx of new movers, local input, and walkability & transportation.

1. Central Austin, TX
Central Austin is a hip and fun neighborhood right in the heart of Austin, TX. It has a variety of well-established local business favorites and new options coming to the scene too. It has excellent walkability connecting restaurants, museums, shops and venues. The neighborhood is also close to the University of Texas – Austin campus, the Capital, and the business area of downtown Austin. There is never a shortage of busy pedestrians in this diverse and eclectic area- and you will always see a vast group of people who call Austin home, alongside those who wish they did.
2. Aledo, TX
With desirable neighborhoods and great schools, it’s easy to see why families love life in Aledo! The school pride is plentiful, and you can always catch locals at a sporting event cheering on their team. This family-friendly neighborhood has that ‘small-town vibe’ that everyone loves and has great local businesses with plenty of variety to keep their locals happy!
3. Nolensville, TN
Nolensville is a historic neighborhood situated in the scenic green hills that overlook the Mill Creek. The neighborhood has become popular for residents that want access to the growing city of Nashville, but also appreciate quaint, small-town living and family owned shops. Nolensville is often described as “where rural meets suburban” making it a great place to raise and family and be part of a community.
4. Bloomington, IN
Bloomington, Indiana is a picturesque neighborhood in the rolling hills of Southern Indiana. Anchored by Indiana University and some of the largest biotech companies in the world, it is a diverse, thriving community of both dreamers and doers. Whether here for school, work or play, the vibrant arts scene and abundance of local businesses will leave you impressed and wanting to spend more time in Bloomington.
5. Smyrna, GA
Smyrna offers residents a variety of outdoor activities, restaurant, and shops – making it a great place to raise a family and be a part of a community. The new Atlanta Braves stadium and the surrounding shopping area, called The Battery, is a hub for family friendly festivals, events, and dining. With close proximity to Atlanta, the neighborhood has become an ideal spot to raise a family and maintain access to the big city amenities.
6. Short North, OH
Artsy, cultural, and hip is how the locals describe The Short North. The neighborhood is full of converted warehouses and edgy art galleries making a stroll through the neighborhood exciting and different around each corner. The local businesses are no exception, you can find vintage record shops, casual eateries, and unique coffee shops filled with busy students throughout the neighborhood.
7. Plymouth, MN
Plymouth is a beautiful lakeside western suburb of Minneapolis rout with charm, family owned and run businesses, award winning restaurants, and fantastic walkability. This neighborhood has so many thriving community events that connect local businesses with residents – which really showcases the neighborhood’s thriving sense of community.
8. Evans, GA
Evans is a neighborhood that has something unique to offer everyone in the family. The neighborhood is known for its abundance of weekend activities that span the full year. There’s always something fun to do in Evans! This constant growing neighborhood prides itself on their sense of community and friendliness.
9. Bloomington, MN
This area of Bloomington has a strong and long tradition of being family-friendly thanks to its great schools, beautiful parks and abundant arts/recreation options. As the area continues to grow the local business scene is growing as well providing residents with a variety of long-established businesses mixed with the newly emerging businesses coming into the area.
10. Southwest Austin, TX
Southwest Austin is a great neighborhood to live, work and raise a family in. The neighborhood offers a variety of home and community options that fit any budget. The presence of local businesses, shopping, and entertainment venues provide residents with everything that they need without ever having to drive far – or even get on a highway. Southwest Austin provides everything a person or family could ask for in terms of shopping, eating out, and entertainment, and that list is constantly growing!
11. Rochester Hills, MI
Rochester Hills is a very special neighborhood that offers residents an excellent education system, a large upscale shopping center, and an abundance of amazing parks and outdoor spaces. The residents take tremendous pride in their community and regularly come together to continue to preserve the neighborhood and make sure that it stays beautiful and clean.
12. Edgewater, CO
Edgewater prides itself on having a small-town feel and great sense of community, while still having convenient access to a big city. If you ask locals, they’ll tell you that it’s the small-town vibe and community involvement that make this neighborhood stand out as unique in a growing city. Most of the businesses are family owned, which shows how much they love their neighborhood and the people in it.
13. Midlothian, VA
Midlothian is a historic Virginia neighborhood dedicated to historic preservation and building a great community to raise children in. The neighborhood has a wonderful mix of new and old as the neighborhood expands local restaurant and shopping options, while holding onto its historic roots and architecture. Spend your day in Midlothian exploring the 44 acre Mines Park and enjoying one of the many family friendly restaurants.
14. Davie, FL
Davie residents are known to shop local and support local, which makes this neighborhood such a great place for small businesses. Community members are always conscious of ways that they can support local businesses and help the whole community thrive. With sun most of the year, residents can often be found enjoying the many parks that Davie offers.
15. Naperville, IL
Naperville Illinois is a neighborhood that loves to celebrate the community. The neighborhood holds many festivals throughout the year which brings together families and friends across the city and beyond. The shopping and entertainment options are diverse ranging from national brands to many small family-owned businesses. Many local businesses partner with local non-profits to give back and support their community throughout the year.
16. Westfield, IN
Westfield boasts miles of trails for biking, hiking, and walking – which interconnects popular parts of the city. Westfield is also home to the Grand Park Sports complex, which is the largest youth sports complex in the nation. It pulls in youth sports locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Westfield has a strong focus on sense of place and livability, which allows everyone to feel welcomed – making it a great community to live in!
17. Mountain Brook, AL
Residents have many options to shop local and support their community with the plethora of shopping villages located in Mountain Brook. Besides their top-notch shopping, Mountain Brook is also host to beautiful homes, incredible cuisine, and park trails that are protected by tall, longstanding trees. Vestavia is a small neighborhood with a strong economy and excellent educational system. The community thrives because there is a great sense of community and connection among businesses and neighbors.
18. Plaza Midwood, NC
Plaza Midwood is a neighborhood where fashion, food, and spray paint rule! You can expect an afternoon of perusing the city’s hippest shops to turn into a night of live music, dancing and craft beer galore. Plaza Midwood has a strong sense of community and is welcoming to all.
19. Kennesaw, GA
Home to Kennesaw Mountain, it is evident that Kennesaw is a place for those that love the outdoors! You will always be able to find someone taking a hike or enjoying a bike ride through the foothills. In addition to the abundant outdoor activities, Kennesaw also has a great downtown area that offers locally owned restaurants, shops and festivals year-round!
20. Greer, SC
“A great place to live, work, and play” is this city’s motto for a reason! Locals spend their time playing sports, hiking, fishing, enjoying lazy days on the lake, and golfing at their elegant golf course. They also love to eat out at the many great dining options that the neighborhood has to offer. This city is continually growing which is why small businesses thrive in Greer!
21. Murrieta, CA
Murrieta is in the heart of Temecula Valley and has a sense of community that can’t be beat! Although large in population, the neighborhood maintains a small-town feel that residents love and appreciate. The community encourages shop local initiatives and makes an extra effort to supports the local business – allowing small businesses to flourish.
22. Hudson Yards, NY
The more recently named Hudson Yards neighborhood has developed out of the New York Far West Side to provide the city with a new, modern, urban neighborhood. The neighborhood has seen significant growth recently as many small and large development projects bring attention and new residents to the neighborhood. The influx of residents has also brought an influx of local businesses and restaurants making this neighborhood a great place to live in NYC.
23. Alamo Heights, TX
Alamo Heights is a neighborhood known for being a tight knit community. The towering trees, winding roads and hills showcase the beauty of the neighborhood and adds to its hometown feel and charm. Although it has seen a lot of growth in recent years, Alamo Heights still maintains its sense of family and community, and is welcoming to all that choose to call it home.
24. Roswell, GA
Just north of Atlanta, GA is where this gem of a city lies. With the Chattahoochee River running through it, Roswell has many parks where residents can enjoy the outdoors with their family, friends, and dogs- maybe finding one of many waterfalls or having a picnic with a view. Downtown Roswell is extremely walkable and has a growing number of great restaurants, shops, and fun events to keep the residents happy and the community strong.
25. Folsom, CA
Folsom is a destination for shopping, dining, and all kinds of entertainment. With the diverse shopping and dining options across Folsom, you can find practically anything you’re looking for! In addition to the many locally owned restaurants and shops, Folsom has many indoor entertainments and outdoor experiences including an extensive network of biking trails that are always full of casual and experienced bikers.
Scoring was determined by assessing and weighing several factors across the 450+ zip codes that Welcomemat currently mails out to. Welcomemat pulled data from proprietary internal data sources and from external data sources to determine the top 25 neighborhoods.
Data points included: growth in new mover volume in 2018, business density numbers, Livability and walkability scores from areavibes.com, and input from local Welcomemat Franchisees on the schools, local vibe, family friendliness, walkability, sense of community, etc. Seasonality was also taken into consideration for mover counts.
